Waymo starts autonomous ride service in Silicon Valley
Waymo, the self-driving car unit of Alphabet, has launched its autonomous ride-hailing service in areas surrounding its headquarters in California.
The service will initially operate within a 27-square-mile swath of Silicon Valley, covering Mountain View, Palo Alto, Los Altos, and parts of Sunnyvale.
A limited number of residents will have access at first, with plans to expand gradually.
Waymo currently provides over 200,000 paid rides weekly in San Francisco and Los Angeles. The company aims to enter 10 more cities over the next year.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently mentioned efforts to lower hardware costs, as Waymo remains part of Alphabet’s “other bets” division, which reported US$400 million in revenue last quarter.
