Waymo has received its first permit from the New York Department of Transportation to begin testing autonomous vehicles in New York City.

The Alphabet subsidiary will operate eight cars in Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn through late September, with an option to extend the trial.

New York state law requires a trained specialist to be present behind the wheel during testing.

This marks the city’s first autonomous vehicle testing program.

Waymo has recently expanded its operations to cities such as Austin and San Francisco, and has announced plans to enter Philadelphia, Atlanta, Miami, and Washington, DC.

The company previously conducted manual driving and data collection in New York in 2021.

Under the current permit, Waymo must regularly submit data to city authorities and coordinate with law enforcement and emergency services.

The New York City government launched a permitting system for autonomous vehicle testing in 2024, setting safety and reporting requirements for companies.
