Waymo gets approval to expand robotaxi service near SF
The California Public Utilities Commission has approved Waymo’s request to expand its commercial robotaxi service, allowing the company to extend its operations south of San Francisco.
This expansion will enhance Waymo’s existing driverless ride-hailing service in the region. Currently, Waymo operates its service in San Francisco and parts of the Peninsula, including Mountain View, Palo Alto, Los Altos, and Sunnyvale.
The service covers around 85 square miles in San Francisco and Silicon Valley. Waymo is also pursuing operations at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
In March, the company received a temporary permit to map roadways at SFO by manually driving vehicles to collect data. However, autonomous operations at the airport are not yet allowed.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ California’s regulatory leadership shapes the national autonomous vehicle landscape
California’s approach to regulating robotaxis like Waymo establishes critical precedents for the entire industry’s development nationwide.
The state’s DMV has created one of America’s most comprehensive regulatory frameworks, requiring manufacturers to report disengagements and collisions as part of stringent testing requirements 1.
These regulations create a structured path for companies to scale operations, with Waymo already having established permit-based service in 85 square miles across San Francisco and Silicon Valley [original article].
The approval for expansion reinforces California’s position as the primary testing ground for autonomy, with 22 states now having passed legislation related to autonomous vehicles 2.
This regulatory foundation helps explain why Waymo can provide 250,000 paid trips weekly across Phoenix, San Francisco, and other cities, demonstrating that thoughtful regulation enables rather than hinders innovation.
Waymo’s cautious approach, stating that immediate expansion isn’t planned despite approval, reflects the deliberate scaling strategy that has become standard under California’s regulatory influence.
2️⃣ Safety metrics provide compelling evidence for robotaxi expansion
Waymo’s expansion approval follows substantial safety data that justifies regulatory confidence in autonomous vehicle technology.
The company’s vehicles have led to an 83% reduction in airbag deployment crashes and an 81% reduction in injury-causing crashes in areas like San Francisco and Phoenix compared to human-driven vehicles 3.
