Waymo expands robotaxi services in US, Tokyo with partners
Waymo, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, is increasing its operations in the United States and internationally.
The robotaxi service, which started as Google’s “project chauffeur” in 2009, operates in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
The company plans to introduce new services in Austin, Texas, and Atlanta in 2025.
Waymo announced Tokyo as its first testing destination outside the US, in partnership with Japan’s GO app and major taxi operator Nihon Kotsu, with testing set to begin in early 2025.
Waymo has taken the lead in the US market after outlasting Cruise, but domestic competitors, including Tesla, led by Elon Musk, and Zoox, owned by Amazon, are working to catch up.
