Wavemaker, ADB Ventures back battery startup in $4m seed
Battery storage developer Blue Whale Energy, a Singapore-based startup, said in a social media post that it raised US$4 million in seed funding.
The round closed a few months before the announcement, the company said. New investors included Wavemaker Partners, SG Growth Capital (SEEDS), and ADB Ventures. Existing backers included Analog Ventures, Monk’s Hill Ventures, and UntroD Capital.
The startup is building a network of batteries across Singapore to free up capacity on the electricity grid.
Blue Whale said projects under construction would increase its capacity 10x within six to eight weeks. It added that this would make the company Singapore’s leading behind-the-meter battery energy storage developer by year-end. The claim could not be independently verified.
Singapore’s Energy Market Authority says storage can enhance grid resilience and manage renewable-energy variability. In 2022, the regulator announced plans for an energy storage system that it describe as a regional milestone.
