Walmart, OpenAI team up for ChatGPT shopping feature

Walmart has partnered with OpenAI to let customers shop directly through ChatGPT, the company announced on October 14.

The new feature will allow purchases from Walmart to be completed within ChatGPT using Instant Checkout.

Walmart, a major US-based retailer, said the integration aims to make shopping more convenient by using AI to assist customers in planning and buying items via chat.

The company already uses AI to enhance product catalogs and customer service, and is expanding AI training for its employees, including deploying ChatGPT Enterprise internally.

Both Walmart and OpenAI said the partnership is intended to simplify everyday purchases using AI technology.

Walmart operates over 10,750 stores and ecommerce sites worldwide and employs about 2.1 million people.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Walmart’s ChatGPT shop raises infrastructure questions

Walmart is working with OpenAI so customers and Sam’s Club members can shop in ChatGPT using Instant Checkout, though execution details remain unclear.

  • The announcement skips how returns and exchanges will work in ChatGPT or how post‑purchase support will run 1.
  • Walmart has not said if the integration works with Walmart+ (the retailer’s paid membership program) or Sam’s Club, programs that lift repeat buys and basket size (average order size) 1.
  • OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (an open technical specification that enables in‑chat purchases with merchants) supports one shipping address and consolidated shipping per checkout session, which can limit complex orders 2.
  • A LinkedIn post said ChatGPT drove 15% of Walmart referrals in September and under 1% of total visits to Walmart.com 3, so revenue lift looks modest even with a near 5% stock gain 4.

Vendors can fill AI retail middleware gaps

  • Retail tech firms can build connectors to OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol for product feeds, inventory systems, and payment processors 5; the spec is open source under Apache 2.0 5.
  • Attribution and analytics tools that tie chats to purchases (tying interactions to purchases) can help retailers, as a LinkedIn commentary said 28% of ChatGPT users visited Walmart.com while conversion data stays unclear 3.
  • Vendors could create orchestration layers (software that coordinates multi‑step processes across systems) for session creation and address handling 2. They would also cover shipping option updates, payment tokenization (replacing sensitive card data with tokens), and order updates required by the protocol.
  • Payment service providers (PSPs) with financial technology (fintech) firms can power secure payments between ChatGPT and merchants 6; the Delegated Payment Spec (a part of the protocol that lets merchants use their own PSPs) lets merchants keep their PSPs.
