Walmart hits $854b market cap after OpenAI shopping deal

Walmart shares rose 5% after the announcement, lifting the company’s market capitalization above US$854 billion, its largest one-day gain since April.

The retailer has announced a partnership with OpenAI that will let customers shop for products on ChatGPT using a “buy” button.

The feature covers items like packaged foods and apparel from Walmart and its Sam’s Club chain, but excludes fresh foods.

If Walmart’s valuation reaches US$1 trillion, it will join a small group of non-tech firms in that range, alongside Berkshire Hathaway and Saudi Aramco.

OpenAI has similar retail partnerships with Etsy and Shopify.
