Walmart to cut or relocate 1,000 corporate jobs

Walmart is cutting or relocating about 1,000 corporate jobs as it consolidates its technology and AI teams, according to a May 12 memo from two senior executives.

The changes are meant to simplify reporting lines, clarify ownership, and better match roles with the skills Walmart needs, said global CTO Suresh Kumar and AI executive vice president Daniel Danker.

Walmart said it would help affected employees look for other roles at the company where possible, and the move follows earlier closures of smaller office hubs and other efforts to streamline operations.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Walmart’s ‘super agent’ strategy is part of its tech reset

  • Walmart is cutting jobs as it reworks its AI lineup after many single-purpose agents became hard for people to sort through 1.
  • The company is folding dozens of tools into four “super agents” with simpler entry points for shoppers, staff, sellers, suppliers, plus software developers 2.
  • Daniel Danker, a recent hire from Instacart, leads the work and reports to CEO Doug McMillon, which places AI near the center of company planning 3.

Walmart’s workforce moves track a longer AI shift in how work gets done

  • Doug McMillon expects Walmart’s global workforce of 2.1 million to stay about flat over the next three years even as some corporate tech jobs are cut or moved 4.
  • Recent staffing moves fit a wider pattern of AI-led role changes instead of a single reshuffle.
  • In July 2025, Walmart said it would remove hundreds of jobs linked to market manager assistants and some Walmart Academy coaching posts. In May 2025, it also announced 1,500 cuts across global tech, U.S. ecommerce fulfillment, and Walmart Connect, the company’s advertising business 5.
  • At large companies, AI may keep driving steady job turnover as some tasks disappear and new roles open in other parts of the business 6.
