Volkswagen VC arm joins battery tech firm’s $30m funding round

UK-based battery technology firm Nyobolt has raised US$30 million in funding to enhance its operations in autonomous warehouse robots and heavy-duty vehicles.

The round was led by IQ Capital and Latitude, with additional contributions from Scania Invest, the venture capital arm of Volkswagen-owned Scania.

With this latest investment, Nyobolt now has US$100 million in total funding and develops ultra-fast charging batteries for ecommerce robots.

It is also testing its fast-charging battery tech for electric vehicles and has met with major automakers.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Fast-charging battery race heats up amid critical EV adoption bottleneck

Nyobolt’s funding highlights the intensifying competition to solve one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: charging time.

The demand for ultra-fast charging solutions has accelerated as the market seeks to replicate the convenience of refueling traditional vehicles, with current lithium-ion batteries facing significant physical limitations for such rapid charging 1.

Since 2019, battery technology investments have surged, with over $1.4 billion invested in the first half of 2019 alone and manufacturing investments projected to reach approximately $150 billion by 2023 2.

Nyobolt isn’t alone in this race. Companies like StoreDot are also developing extreme fast-charging batteries, with StoreDot targeting its “100in5” technology (providing 100 miles of range from just 5 minutes of charging) by 2024 3.

This competition is spurring innovation across different technological approaches, all aimed at addressing consumer concerns about EVs while enabling the broader transition to electric mobility.

2️⃣ Industrial applications first: A strategic entry point for battery innovation

Nyobolt’s initial focus on warehouse robots and heavy-duty vehicles reveals a smart go-to-market strategy increasingly common among battery startups.

Industrial applications typically offer higher margins and clearer return-on-investment case studies than the highly competitive consumer EV market, allowing companies to refine technology while generating revenue.

For autonomous warehouse robots operating around the clock, charging speed represents a direct productivity advantage. Every minute charging is a minute not working, making customers willing to pay premium prices for Nyobolt’s solution 4.
