Volkswagen to add AI agents to cars in China in 2026
Volkswagen said in Beijing on April 21 that it will add AI agents to new cars built for China from the second half of 2026 through models using its China-only electronic architecture.
The move comes as the German automaker tries to catch up with Chinese rivals on EVs and software while also responding to pressure on prices and development speed.
Volkswagen said the system was built with Chinese automotive chipmaker Horizon Robotics and can handle more complex tasks than a standard voice assistant.
The software could find a restaurant and book a table before guiding the driver there and arranging parking, said Ralf Brandstaetter, Volkswagen China chief.
The group also plans to launch more than 20 new electrified vehicles in China and 50 new models overall by 2030.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Volkswagen’s AI assistant grows from a 2.4 billion euros (US$2.82 billion) push into local tech
- Volkswagen’s new in-car AI agent fits its wider plan to build more technology in China. That effort includes a roughly 2.4 billion euros (US$2.82 billion) deal with Horizon Robotics, a Chinese maker of automotive chips and driving software, announced in 2022. The agreement also included plans for a joint venture (JV), a company owned by two or more partners 1.
- The JV, CARIZON, gives Volkswagen software unit CARIAD a 60% controlling stake. That setup makes the relationship deeper than a standard supplier deal 1.
- CARIZON develops advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) plus autonomous-driving software for Volkswagen vehicles sold in China. Horizon said its Horizon Superdrive system will go into Volkswagen models through CARIAD research and development work with CARIZON 1.
- The arrangement also connects Volkswagen to a local supplier with broad reach. Horizon Robotics already serves Chinese automakers including BYD, Li Auto and SAIC 2.
Volkswagen’s China-first AI signals more region-specific development
- Volkswagen’s “in China, for China” plan centers on products built for Chinese customers, from design and digital cockpit services to advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous-driving features 3.
- Volkswagen links its Horizon Robotics work to localized advanced driver-assistance and autonomous-driving capabilities for China. It also lists supply ties with Qualcomm, a US chip designer, plus STMicroelectronics, a European semiconductor company, as part of its regional supplier setup 2.
- Outside that tie-up, Volkswagen has invested about US$700 million for a 4.99% stake in XPeng Motors, a Chinese electric-vehicle maker. The two companies plan to jointly develop two China-focused models for production in 2026 4.
- This split model may push other global automakers to rethink one-size-fits-all development. They may need region-specific vehicles to keep up in China’s fast-moving market.
