Volkswagen launches first electric GTI model

Volkswagen said it will debut the ID. Polo GTI, its first all-electric GTI model, at the Nürburgring 24 Hours in Germany from May 14 to 17, as the carmaker marks 50 years since the Golf GTI launched in 1976.

The car uses Volkswagen’s MEB+ EV platform, a 226-horsepower motor, and a 52 kWh NMC battery that uses cell-to-pack design to cut weight and volume.

Volkswagen will also enter three Golf GTI Clubsport 24h race cars with 397 horsepower, added gearbox cooling, more carbon fiber parts, and a weight of 1,200 kg without the driver.

During the event, it plans to display past Golf GTI models and a Golf R 24H show car linked to a race program targeted at next year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours.

Volkswagen builds its sporty EV on a lower-cost base

While the GTI version aims at driving fans, the standard ID. Polo is built for wider use and starts at 24,995 euros (US$29,000) in Germany 1.
That price comes with a smaller 37 kWh (net) lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. It uses a lower-cost chemistry and gives base trims up to 329 km under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), a European vehicle testing standard 1.
On the MEB+ platform, the electric Polo gets a 441-litre luggage compartment. That is 25% larger than the gasoline-powered model before it 1.
