Vodafone taps Ericsson, Nokia for $2.7b network rollout

VodafoneThree has awarded Ericsson and Nokia a contract worth £2 billion (US$2.7 billion) to expand its mobile network across the UK.

Ericsson will deploy radio access network (RAN) systems at 10,000 sites, and upgrade the core network, while Nokia will supply RAN technology to 7,000 sites.

The contract will run for eight years, and comes as European telecom operators slow network upgrades amid weak market conditions.

Vodafone Group said it is running a separate tender for its wider European network, with Samsung, Ericsson, and Nokia among the partners.
