Vivo takes on Apple Vision Pro with lighter, cheaper headset

Vivo has launched a mixed-reality headset called Vivo Vision, which closely resembles Apple’s Vision Pro in design and interface.

The Chinese smartphone maker said its device weighs 398g, about 35% less than Apple’s headset, which starts at 600g.

Vivo also indicated the Vision is likely to cost around one-third of the price of Apple’s competing device.

The headset features two OLED displays with a combined 8K resolution (3,840 x 3,552 pixels per eye) and uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2 platform.

Vivo said the new chip delivers a 15% higher graphics processing frequency over the previous model.

The headset supports eye tracking and hand gesture controls, and comes with two strap options: a solo knit band and a dual-loop band.

Currently, the Vivo Vision is compatible only with select Vivo smartphones and Windows 10 or newer computers for screen projection.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Weight reduction emerges as key differentiator in VR headset competition

Vivo’s decision to prioritize weight reduction addresses one of the most persistent barriers to VR adoption, user comfort during extended wear.

The Vivo Vision weighs just 398 grams compared to Apple Vision Pro’s 600-650 grams, representing a 35-40% weight reduction that could significantly impact user experience 23.

This weight advantage comes alongside superior display specifications, with Vivo offering 8K resolution (3840 x 3552 pixels per eye) compared to Apple’s 3660 x 3200 pixels per eye 2.

The engineering achievement suggests manufacturers are finding ways to deliver enhanced performance while solving practical usability concerns.

Weight has historically been cited as a major complaint among high-end VR headset users, making this a strategic focus area for market differentiation 1.

2️⃣ Aggressive pricing strategy targets mass market expansion beyond early adopters
