Vivo launches elite recruit plan for AI, chips, and XR

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo has launched a global recruitment initiative called the Project Blue Polaris (蓝极星计划). This program aims to hire talents with expertise in artificial intelligence, chip design, and extended reality (XR).

Vivo plans to hire around 100 researchers and engineers under the program and offers uncapped compensation packages to appeal to highly qualified candidates. The initiative is limited to PhD-level applicants, underlining its ambition to compete for elite talent.

The launch of Project Blue Polaris comes amid a broader push by Chinese tech companies to deepen their capabilities in strategic technologies and secure top talent. Huawei’s long-running “Genius Youth” program, for example, offers million-yuan salaries to standout hires, while JD.com recently kicked off its own TGT (Top Global Talent) initiative with similar incentives.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The global tech talent war extends beyond salaries to recruitment structures

Vivo’s PhD-exclusive Blue Polaris Plan reflects a broader pattern where tech companies create elite hiring programs with distinct branding to attract specialized talent.

This approach mirrors Huawei’s “Genius Youth” program launched in 2019, which offered annual salaries in the millions of yuan and has successfully recruited top technical talent for AI initiatives 1.

The uncapped compensation packages highlight how Chinese tech giants have adopted Silicon Valley’s extreme talent valuation models, where exceptional individuals are viewed as potentially worth multiples of standard compensation.

These structured recruitment programs serve a dual purpose: they simplify identifying top talent through credential filtering (PhD requirements) while creating prestige that makes the positions more attractive to candidates who could work anywhere.

The geographic distribution of positions across five Chinese cities (Shanghai, Dongguan, Xi’an, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou) demonstrates how these companies are creating dispersed innovation hubs rather than centralizing all research talent.

2️⃣ PhDs bring specific advantages to cutting-edge technology development

Tech companies’ growing preference for PhDs in specialized roles reflects recognition of their unique skill sets beyond technical knowledge alone.

PhDs typically offer proven research capabilities, analytical thinking, and experience in navigating uncertain knowledge domains, which are particularly valuable for frontier technologies like AI models and XR where established playbooks don’t exist 2.

The academic training of PhD holders includes skills in designing experiments, critically evaluating results, and developing novel approaches to complex problems, which are assets for companies exploring uncharted technical territory 3.

Companies benefit from these researchers’ existing specialized networks within academic communities, providing ongoing access to cutting-edge research and potential collaboration opportunities with universities 2.
