Visa launches Scan to Pay for QR payments across APAC

Visa has launched its Scan to Pay QR payment solution across Asia-Pacific, allowing millions of merchants to accept payments through widely used digital wallets and payment apps.

The rollout is part of a broader Visa Pay initiative that connects participating digital wallets to Visa-accepting merchants worldwide.

The service is supported by partnerships with bank apps and wallets such as Samsung Wallet, LinePay, VNPT Money, Woori Card, Hyundai Card, and QR payment providers like Lakala, FOMO Pay, VNPAY, NextPay, and OpenRice.

Visa said its Scan to Pay solution aims to offer consumers more payment options and flexibility, both locally and when traveling.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Visa Scan to Pay links local QR systems, with few live markets named

  • People use Alipay, WeChat Pay, or national QR wallets in Asia-Pacific (APAC) at home, not abroad 1. Visa routes QR payments on its network so a Samsung Wallet user could scan at a VNPAY merchant in Vietnam with the same app 2.
  • Visa has not named which APAC countries or national schemes accept Scan to Pay at launch 3. An earlier pilot was set for Singapore 3. A clear list of wallets and merchants would show reach.
  • The setup uses tokenization 1. Tokens replace card data for one-time use and add safeguards versus irrevocable real-time domestic payments (instant transfers that can’t be reversed once sent) 1.

Gateways and POS software can win cross-border wallet spend by integrating now

  • Gateways, point-of-sale (POS) software firms, and merchant aggregators can add international wallet acceptance with Visa Scan to Pay. Visa Platform Connect gives a single link to VisaNet, with typical integration in 4 to 6 weeks 4.
  • Prioritize places with named QR connectors and wallets 2. China has Lakala. Singapore has FOMO Pay. Vietnam lists VNPAY, NextPay, and VNPT Money. Taiwan has LINE Pay. Hong Kong has OpenRice. Korea lists Woori Card and Hyundai Card 2.
  • Visa connects with over 280 acquirers or processors, plus more than 600 integrated partners across 160 countries 5. Early movers can stand out with unified QR acceptance, so merchants avoid juggling many providers.
