VinFast responds to local group disruptions at Indonesia factory
Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast has confirmed that the construction of its manufacturing facility in Subang, West Java, Indonesia, is on schedule.
This follows a brief disruption linked to acts of intimidation by local mass organizations.
The facility will cover 171 hectares in a growing industrial area.
The US$200 million investment aims to produce up to 50,000 vehicles annually, with areas dedicated to body shop, assembly, paint, and testing.
Moeldoko, Chairman of the Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industry Association, confirmed the intimidation reports and highlighted similar issues faced by another automaker.
VinFast stated that the project complies with local regulations and maintains positive relations with the surrounding community.
The company indicated that further updates would be provided as developments occur.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Indonesia’s EV ambitions face complicated dynamics despite rich nickel reserves
VinFast’s investment comes amid Indonesia’s larger push to become a Southeast Asian EV hub, leveraging the country’s vast nickel reserves which are essential for battery production.
The Indonesian government banned nickel ore exports in 2020 specifically to stimulate domestic battery manufacturing and attract foreign investment like VinFast’s 1.
Despite these initiatives, investor interest has been uneven with less than 5% of Indonesian car sales being electric in 2024, and high-profile companies including Tesla having declined to invest due to environmental compliance concerns 1.
The $200 million VinFast plant reflects the government’s goal of producing 600,000 EVs by 2030, which could potentially reduce CO2 emissions by 160,000 tons annually 2.
The reported intimidation by local mass organizations that briefly disrupted VinFast’s construction highlights the complex social dynamics that foreign investors must navigate in Indonesia’s evolving industrial landscape.
