VinFast plans to raise investment up to $1b in Indonesia

VinFast, a Vietnamese EV maker, plans to raise its investment in Indonesia to as much as US$1 billion, according to the head of its local operations.

The company recently opened its first plant in Subang, West Java, with an initial production capacity of 50,000 cars a year.

VinFast has invested US$300 million in Indonesia so far and expects the new plant to reach full capacity in Q1 2026.

The executive said future investment could go beyond US$1 billion if demand increases.

VinFast aims to eventually boost the plant’s capacity to 350,000 cars annually.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Indonesia’s EV market lacks the scale to absorb VinFast’s 350k capacity ambition

  • VinFast plans to scale Subang output from 50,000 to 350,000 units, which does not fit Indonesia’s EV reality. Battery Electric Vehicle sales reached 23,900 units in January–April 2025, a 211% year-over-year jump 1.
  • Sales fell 14.7% to 784,788 units in January–November 2024, and Gabungan Industri Kendaraan Bermotor Indonesia (GAIKINDO) cut the 2024 target from 1.1 million to 850,000 units 2. VinFast’s 350,000 goal implies over 40% of total sales at today’s size, unlikely against Toyota’s 36.3% share in November 2024 and other brands 2.
  • Without policy shifts or an export plan, the expansion risks idle capacity in a market still finding its EV footing.

Charging operators can benefit from West Java’s capacity-infrastructure mismatch

  • Production will cluster in West Java, yet Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) runs a thin charging network. Only 3,558 chargers sit across 2,412 locations as of March 2025, with long waits and limited coverage flagged by analysts 1.
  • PLN will add 122 pole-mounted chargers (compact units affixed to utility poles to cut land and construction costs), with 92 in West Java and 30 in West Sumatra 3. It invites private partners and tests pole-mounted units to cut land costs 1.
  • Vendors can integrate with PLN’s system 31. The PLN Mobile app (PLN’s consumer app for locating and paying for charging) offers another route, with a head start for those that track tenders 31. Prioritize sites near the Subang plant or highway corridors 31.
