Vietnam’s Viettel unveils VGC v1.0 chip for secure government systems
Vietnam’s Government Cipher Committee and Viettel, a Vietnam-based military and telecoms group, unveiled the VGC v1.0 security chip and a domestically designed secure semiconductor platform in Hanoi on November 3.
The partners said the platform uses the open RISC-V architecture, which lets Vietnamese engineers design and modify processors independently.
VGC v1.0 passed technical tests in the first quarter of 2026 and has already been deployed in secure USB storage devices used by Party, government, and defense agencies.
They next plan to integrate the chip into applications supporting Vietnam’s national digital signature certification system, which has more than 2 million certificates in circulation.
A new agreement between the two organizations covers volume production, a multicore secure chip platform, product testing, and workforce training.
The move comes as Vietnam builds a domestic civil cryptography ecosystem, develops its semiconductor sector, and regulates e-signatures and trust services under a dedicated legal framework.
