Vietnam’s Techcombank offers up to $1m scholarships in AI competition

Techcombank will award a scholarship worth up to US$1 million to the winning team of Vietnam’s National AI Challenge, a new televised competition launched under the Vietnamese government’s AI strategy.

The Hanoi-based bank is serving as a strategic partner and co-organizer of the event, which aims to foster AI talent and innovation in the country.

The competition, co-organized by the National Data Centre, National Data Association, Vietnam Television, and Techcombank, brings together over 400 teams developing AI solutions for sectors such as finance, education, and healthcare.

The challenge will run through several rounds, with the final broadcast live on Vietnam Television in January 2026.

The top team will receive the scholarship to pursue advanced AI studies abroad.

Vietnam has identified AI as a strategic priority and is seeking to become a regional hub for AI research and application by 2030.

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Compute and tooling vendors can capture near-term demand from 400+ competing teams

  • More than 400 teams plan AI projects across finance, education, and healthcare through early 2026. They need graphics processing unit (GPU) cloud credits and machine learning operations (MLOps) platforms. They also need data labeling services and privacy-compliance tooling (software for meeting data protection regulations). Sponsors like Techcombank have not publicly covered this gap.
  • Cloud providers and AI infrastructure vendors not named in the challenge can sponsor compute credits or platform access to grow brand presence in Vietnam’s AI scene. Huawei, Alibaba, and Siemens backed Hong Kong’s AI competition in a similar way 2.
  • Enterprise software firms with data governance or model monitoring tools can offer free tiers to teams to seed a sales pipeline. Those teams can become paying customers as Vietnam builds out AI through 2030.
