Vietnamese solar financing startup Stride raises $15m

Stride, a Vietnam-based rooftop solar financing platform for households and small businesses, raised a US$15 million series B.

The round co-led by Lightrock and TRIREC through Accelerate7 to expand nationwide and enter new markets.

Existing investors Clime Capital and UOB Venture Management also joined the round, which the company said will also support its installer network, digital tools, and quality controls.

Vietnam’s installed solar capacity has risen from near zero in 2018 to more than 19 GW, while the country’s Power Development Plan VIII targets rooftop solar at 50% of residential and office buildings by 2030.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Vietnam’s rooftop solar boom runs on household savings

  • Vietnam has ambitious renewable energy goals, yet many Stride customers choose rooftop solar to cut electricity bills 1.
  • A typical home system costs about US$4,000. Many families cannot cover that upfront, and large banks often avoid small consumer loans for purchases like this 1.
  • Stride’s financing model fills that gap by spreading out the cost 1.

Stride’s funding offers a model for emerging markets

  • Stride’s business suggests one barrier to solar adoption in developing countries is access to consumer credit, rather than the technology itself 1.
  • The need reaches beyond Vietnam. In one Afghanistan study, more than 92% of respondents said they were open to solar if loans were available 2.
  • The investment also fits a wider move in climate finance toward platforms that bundle demand from households and small businesses, instead of focusing only on large utility-scale projects.
  • That approach can support national energy targets through distributed adoption from homes and small firms 3.
