Vietnamese Grab drivers are using social media to call for a two-day boycott of the ride-hailing app this weekend, saying changes to its payment structure in July pushed earnings to unsustainably low levels.

Posts in a public Facebook group for Grab drivers shared screenshots of lower pay and urged other drivers to stop accepting rides in protest.

One post in the Vietnam Grab Driver Community, which has 169,000 members, called on drivers to “stand together” and switch off the app.

According to posts in the group, deductions could reach 50% of a fare.

Drivers said they would be left with net earnings of about 2,600 dong (US$0.1) per kilometer for motorcycle rides and 6,000 dong (US$0.23) per kilometer for car trips, before paying for fuel, maintenance, and vehicle depreciation.

Grab did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

One Facebook user in the group warned that if Grab left Vietnam, drivers “would be left with nothing.”

Grab remains one of Vietnam’s largest ride-hailing operators and also runs food delivery and other digital services in the country.
