Vietnam, French tech group open two AI research centers

Vietnam’s National Innovation Centre and French technology group Dassault Systèmes have opened two research centers in Hanoi focused on AI and digital twin technologies.

Launched on January 8, the facilities will work on aerospace, semiconductors, manufacturing, energy, healthcare, and smart cities, and provide training using Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

The Center of Excellence will initially prioritize aerospace, with plans to expand into semiconductors and mobility.

Vietnamese officials said the centers support the country’s national digital transformation efforts and the development of skilled engineers.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyễn Chí Dũng encouraged Dassault Systèmes to scale up R&D in Vietnam and collaborate with local partners on technology transfer and investment.

Dassault Systèmes, a French technology group, has worked with Vietnamese enterprises and academic institutions for over 20 years.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Vietnam’s centers are research and development (R&D) labs, not full production facilities, which shapes their place in the semiconductor ecosystem

  • The centers focus on R&D, training, and technology demonstrations instead of chip fabrication or large-scale manufacturing 1. Vietnam is building a design and talent base rather than contesting with semiconductor fabrication (fab) hubs in Taiwan or South Korea.
  • Dassault’s 3DEXPERIENCE platform supports simulation-based training without costly physical labs 2. This lowers infrastructure spend and improves access to advanced equipment while growing the local engineering pool.
  • The Center of Excellence will prioritize aerospace first, then expand into semiconductors and advanced mobility 1, which would complement the country’s chip goals.

Systems integrators can tap government programs tied to the centers’ applied research

  • Systems integrators (companies that combine hardware and software into working solutions) can support Vietnam’s digital transformation by adding digital twin tools to public infrastructure projects.
  • The centers will showcase uses in smart cities, energy, and healthcare 1. Vendors can pursue contracts that serve the National Innovation Centre (NIC) facilities and other public projects.
  • deputy prime minister Nguyễn Chí Dũng urged Dassault Systèmes to scale its R&D in Vietnam and work with local partners on technology transfer plus investment. That push would mean growth beyond the first centers. Cloud providers, GPU vendors, plus Internet of Things (IoT) specialists can pursue partnerships. Dassault will grow its footprint while training clients on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.
