Vietnam eyes $3.9t global biotech market

Vietnam is ramping up efforts to grow its biotech sector, as the global biotech market is forecast to reach nearly US$3.9 trillion by 2030.

At a national conference in Ho Chi Minh City, government officials and scientists discussed a strategy for the industry from 2026 to 2030.

Nguyen Phu Hung of the Ministry of Science and Technology said Vietnam has developed core technologies in gene editing, cell technology, recombinant DNA, and next-generation vaccine technologies, but sees investment as insufficient.

As of September, Vietnam had approved 217 biotech research projects, with funding of over VND754 billion (US$29 million).

Applications in agriculture include DNA barcoding of over 180 rice and 53 medicinal plant varieties, with reported economic benefits.

In healthcare, the country can produce 10 types of vaccines and has advanced in personalized medicine and diagnostics.
