Vertex leads Malaysian chip startup GreatAsic’s $6.9m round
GreatAsic Technology Sdn. Bhd., a Malaysia-based fabless chip design company, has raised US$6.9 million in a pre-series A round.
Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India led the round, with participation from Ehsan Kapital and Gobi Partners.
The company said it will use the funding to hire engineers, expand operations, and develop silicon projects for data centers, edge AI, and automotive applications.
GreatAsic designs custom application-specific integrated circuits and AI system-on-chip platforms for global markets.
The round comes as Malaysia’s National Semiconductor Strategy pushes the country beyond semiconductor assembly and testing into integrated circuit design and other higher-value segments.
The strategy includes 25 billion ringgit (US$6.16 billion) in targeted incentives and plans to train 60,000 engineers.
GreatAsic said its leadership team has held roles at Altera, Broadcom, Intel, Marvell, and StarFive.
Vertex also said it sees semiconductor startups in Southeast Asia and India as a venture opportunity. It has also invested in India-based BigEndian Semiconductors.
