US-based sensor maker Aeva sells 6% stake for $50m

Aeva Technologies, a California-based sensor maker, sold a 6% stake for US$50 million to an undisclosed strategic partner.

The partner is a tech-focused affiliate of a Global Fortune 500 company that will help Aeva produce sensors for passenger vehicles.

Aeva specializes in lidar sensors that create 3D views of surroundings and measure the speed of moving objects.

Their technology supports autonomous driving and industrial automation.

The new partner’s identity was not revealed, but Aeva already works with firms like Daimler Truck AG.

This investment aims to boost Aeva’s sensor manufacturing capacity and strengthen its market position.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Aeva’s strategic investment comes amid intense LiDAR market growth and consolidation

The global LiDAR market is experiencing exceptional growth rates, projected to expand from approximately $1.65 billion in 2024 to $8.63 billion by 2034, representing an 18.0% CAGR over the decade 1.

This surge is particularly pronounced in the automotive sector, which is growing even faster at 41.6% CAGR as manufacturers race to integrate advanced sensing technologies for autonomous driving capabilities 2.

The timing of Aeva’s strategic partnership is significant as the industry is increasingly dominated by four key players: Hesai, Seyond (formerly Innovusion), RoboSense, and Valeo, which collectively control nearly 90% of the market share 3.

Market leader RoboSense has demonstrated the growth potential in this space, reporting a 109.6% year-over-year increase in LiDAR sales with approximately 544,000 units sold in 2024, while achieving significant profitability improvements 4.

For Aeva, a company not currently among the top four dominant players, strategic partnerships represent a critical pathway to scale manufacturing capabilities and secure its position in a rapidly consolidating market.

2️⃣ Manufacturing partnerships are becoming essential for scaling in the sensor hardware space

Aeva’s decision to involve a strategic partner in manufacturing follows a trend emerging across the hardware technology sector, where production scale and efficiency are becoming competitive differentiators.
