US-based OpenMind helps Chinese robotics makers expand overseas
United States software company OpenMind is working with several Chinese robotics firms, including Unitree, UBTech, AgiBot, LimX Dynamics, Booster Robotics, and Engine AI, to facilitate their entry into international markets.
OpenMind’s CEO, Jan Liphardt, said that the company’s open-source AI operating system, OM1, aims to bridge Chinese humanoid robot makers with global audiences, especially in the US.
China is considered ahead of the US in robotics hardware, due to its mature supply chain and domestic competition.
Liphardt noted that collaboration with Chinese firms can help reduce regulatory barriers by enabling the use of US-hosted software and data.
OpenMind’s OS is hardware-agnostic, capable of working across various robot types, and focuses on human-interactive scenarios like retail, hospitals, and schools.
The company also supports Chinese firms’ marketing efforts to increase their visibility abroad.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
OpenMind aims to run robots like a platform, not only an OS
- OpenMind plans an Android-like model, with a Robot App Store built on the OM1 operating system 1.
- The store lets robot owners buy and install third-party apps for focused jobs like logistics or hospitality workflows 1.
- OpenMind introduced x402, a payment system tied to a “machine economy” concept 2.
- x402 is described as letting robots handle payments on their own, such as paying for services 2.
A cross-border pairing that could push more value into software
- The approach combines China’s hardware base with US-hosted software and data, which could help Chinese humanoid robot makers sell abroad while coping with geopolitical tech friction.
- If OM1 gains broad use, it could become a common software layer that changes how robotics companies compete.
- In 2024, 200,000 professional service robots were sold, so a shared OS could simplify fleet management while supporting safety, transparency, and regulatory expectations 3.
