US-based chip design firm Cadence lifts 2025 forecasts
Cadence Design Systems has raised its revenue and profit forecasts for 2025, citing increased demand for its chip design software due to advancements in AI.
The company now expects revenue to range from US$5.15 billion to US$5.23 billion, compared to the previous forecast of US$5.14 billion to US$5.22 billion.
The new guidance aligns with analysts’ expectation of US$5.19 billion in revenue.
The adjusted profit per share outlook has also been raised to a range of US$6.73 to US$6.83, up from US$6.65 to US$6.75.
In its first-quarter report, Cadence’s revenue of US$1.24 billion met expectations, and its adjusted profit of US$1.57 per share exceeded the US$1.49 estimate.
Despite the positive outlook, Cadence’s shares fell over 1% in extended trading due to concerns regarding its business in China, which is a significant market for the company.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ EDA firms are capturing outsized value in the AI chip boom
Cadence’s raised forecast reflects the unique position EDA (Electronic Design Automation) firms occupy in the AI supply chain, as they are essentially selling “shovels in the gold rush” of chip development.
The global semiconductor industry is projected to reach $697 billion in 2025, with AI chips specifically contributing over $150 billion or 20% of total sales 1.
While chip manufacturers face capacity constraints and high capital expenditures, EDA companies like Cadence benefit from recurring software revenue with minimal manufacturing costs.
This explains why the EDA market is projected to grow from $15.25 billion in 2021 to $31.45 billion by 2028 at a 10.12% CAGR 2, outpacing many segments of the hardware industry.
Cadence’s current $79.45 billion market cap 3 reflects this premium position, as its software and services enable complex AI chips without the manufacturing risks.
2️⃣ China market tensions highlight growing semiconductor regionalization
Cadence’s flat China revenue forecast signals a broader trend of regionalization in the previously global semiconductor ecosystem.
