US weighs DeepSeek ban on gov’t devices, sources say

The US government is considering banning the Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek from government devices over national security concerns, according to sources.

Officials worry about its data handling, as the company stores user information on servers in China, the Wall Street Journal reported. There are also discussions about restricting the app in US stores and limiting support from US-based cloud providers.

In a related move, 21 state attorneys general have urged Congress to prohibit DeepSeek on government devices.

The White House has not yet commented.

DeepSeek gained attention in January 2025 when its low-cost AI models impacted global equity markets, raising concerns about competition with major AI companies.
