US traffic regulator investigates Model Y Tesla door handles
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into Tesla’s electronic door handles after reports that they may not function when the vehicle’s low-voltage battery fails.
The probe currently focuses on the 2021 Tesla Model Y, affecting roughly 174,290 vehicles, but could expand to other models.
Tesla relies on a 12-volt battery for door operation and uses electrically powered, flush door handles across its lineup.
NHTSA noted that while Tesla vehicles include manual door releases inside the cabin, these can be difficult to locate or operate, especially for children, during emergencies.
The investigation follows reports of occupants struggling to exit Teslas after accidents or fires, including cases where individuals broke windows to escape.
Since 2018, NHTSA has received over 140 complaints about Tesla door failures, citing nine reports that contributed to the investigation.
