US traffic regulator ends probe into Waymo self-driving cars
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has concluded its 14-month investigation into minor collisions and unexpected behavior involving Waymo’s self-driving vehicles.
The agency said July 25, that no further action will be taken.
The investigation began in May 2024 after 22 reports of potential traffic law violations and unexpected behavior, including 17 collisions.
NHTSA’s decision was influenced by two recalls from Waymo.
In 2024, the company recalled vehicles that collided with utility poles. In May 2025, it recalled over 1,200 vehicles to update software for better detection of barriers like chains and gates.
Waymo operates more than 1,500 vehicles and conducts over 250,000 fully autonomous rides weekly. It plans to expand to cities like New York, Miami, and Washington, DC.
