US to restrict Chinese drones, heavy vehicles over security

The Trump administration plans to introduce rules restricting or possibly banning imports of Chinese drones and medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, citing national security concerns.

The Commerce Department said it will issue the new rules as early as September to address risks involving information and communications technology used in drones and vehicles over 10,000 pounds from China and other foreign adversaries.

Details of the restrictions have not yet been released.

Chinese imports make up most US commercial drone sales, with over half supplied by DJI.

The upcoming rules follow earlier measures limiting imports of Chinese cars and trucks, set to take effect in late 2026.

The Commerce Department began national security investigations into drone and vehicle imports earlier this year, which could result in higher tariffs.
