US to ban Nvidia’s latest AI chip sales to China: report
The White House has informed federal agencies that it will not permit Nvidia to sell its latest scaled-down AI chip, the B30A, to China, according to a report by The Information citing unnamed sources.
Nvidia has already provided samples of the B30A to several Chinese customers, the report said.
The B30A chip can be used to train large language models in clustered setups, a capability many Chinese companies require.
Nvidia is reportedly working on modifying the chip’s design in hopes that the US administration will reconsider its stance.
A spokesperson for Nvidia told Reuters the company does not factor China into its guidance for datacenter compute, citing its lack of market share there.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
What the reported B30A block says about Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) thresholds
- Under the January 2025 interim final rule (IFR), advanced computing integrated circuit exports face a licensing regime with Total Processing Performance thresholds and country tiering 1.
- Earlier BIS updates used performance density and data-center design or marketing, so more than raw compute can matter 2.
- Compliance with the January 2025 framework begins May 15, 2025, and any redesign must meet Export Administration Regulations 1. Which thresholds apply is still unclear.
- Reported White House move to bar B30A sales to China leaves criteria undefined and any tie to the IFR unconfirmed, with no public rationale.
Chip security startups can target compliance monitoring gaps from smuggling estimates
- Public estimates put 2024 smuggling at 10,000 to several hundred thousand AI chips with median near 140,000, which could equal 1 to 40 percent of China’s training compute with median near 10 percent 3.
- With BIS understaffed, startups can offer tamper-resistant hardware, delay-based location checks that use latency to confirm device location, or anti-circumvention tools. These align with proposed conditional export frameworks with “High Security” certifications 4.
- Low Processing Performance license exception permits 1,700 advanced AI chips per firm each year in select destinations, with no country cap. This invites shell companies (paper entities that hide real end-users). Monitoring of serials, shipment patterns, and end-use can cut this risk 4.
- Data Center Validated End-User authorizations under the IFR carry security duties. Real-time asset tracking helps show compliance 1.
