US tech startup Runway to launch AI gaming tool
Runway, a startup valued at US$3 billion, plans to enter the gaming industry with a new interactive gaming experience set to launch next week.
The initial product will feature a chat interface for text and image generation.
The company also aims to introduce advanced AI-generated video game capabilities later this year.
CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela said Runway is in talks with gaming companies to integrate its technology and access their datasets for training.
Runway has previously worked with major studios, including Amazon’s “House of David.”

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ AI’s evolution from opponent to creator mirrors the film industry’s transformation
Runway’s gaming expansion continues a historical pattern in AI’s relationship with games. Since IBM’s Deep Blue defeated chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997, AI has progressed from being a game opponent to becoming a creative tool for game development itself1.
This evolution is somewhat similar to what happened in the film industry, where AI tools like those developed by Runway moved from basic post-production tasks to generating entire scenes. The company’s CEO points to Amazon’s show “House of David” as an example of this progression in filmmaking2.
The gaming industry’s quick adoption of generative AI tools appears to be accelerating faster than Hollywood’s adoption curve, with Valenzuela noting that gaming companies are “moving faster than the studios were moving two years ago”2.
The shift from AI playing games to creating them represents a significant transformation in how we understand computational creativity, similar to how AI transitioned from analyzing films to helping make them.
2️⃣ Game development faces a potential economic transformation through AI tools
Runway’s CEO directly states their goal to help developers “make games faster” – potentially as much as 40% faster based on their experience with film studios2.
This efficiency claim aligns with broader industry projections that show the gaming market growing from £372.16 billion to £541.63 billion by 2029, with AI advancement being a key driver of this expansion3.
The economics of game development could change substantially as AI tools democratize creation. Currently, AAA game development requires massive teams and budgets, but AI could potentially lower these barriers significantly4.
