File sharing app Napster has been acquired by the 3D technology firm Infinite Reality for US$207 million.
The acquisition was announced on Mar. 25, adding a new chapter to the history of the digital music-sharing platform.
Infinite Reality plans to incorporate Napster into its initiatives focused on the metaverse. The company aims to create virtual 3D spaces where fans can attend concerts, join listening parties, and buy both physical and virtual merchandise.
John Acunto, CEO of Infinite Reality, said that the acquisition aligns with the company’s vision of building interactive spaces centered on music and community.
Launched in 1999 by Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, Napster was the first major peer-to-peer file-sharing platform.
It enabled users to exchange MP3 music files.
