US State Dept pauses $400m armored EV plan involving Tesla
The US State Department has paused plans for a US$400 million purchase of armored EVs, which initially involved Tesla.
While Tesla was the only manufacturer to show interest since the proposal began in May 2024, no contract has been awarded, and the project remains in the planning stages.
The request for bids, originally expected by May 2025, is now on hold indefinitely, with no plans to resume.
The agency also revised its internal contract forecast, clarifying that Tesla was mistakenly listed as a potential contractor instead of “EV manufacturers” in general.
A separate contract listing still includes BMW as a possible vendor.
Tesla, which has previously received US$41.9 million in government vehicle-related contracts, has not commented on the situation.
