US software firm Qualtrics closes $6.8b healthcare deal

Qualtrics said on May 19 it completed its US$6.75 billion acquisition of Press Ganey Forsta, a US healthcare experience and research firm, to expand its healthcare data and AI tools.

Press Ganey Forsta’s systems are used by more than 41,000 healthcare facilities, including most US hospitals, according to Qualtrics.

Qualtrics said the deal adds decades of patient feedback, benchmarking, and regulatory data to its platform.

The company also called it the largest tech acquisition in Utah history.

The combination reflects a wider industry push to merge experience and operational data for AI-driven decision making in healthcare.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The acquisition ran into financing strain and integration questions

  • The deal closed during a rough stretch for the banks behind the financing, which faced estimated paper losses of more than US$500 million on the US$5.3 billion debt package 1.
  • Demand for that debt package faded as investors worried about AI-driven valuations. The financing became the year’s largest hung deal, which means banks had trouble selling it to investors in the leveraged finance market 1.
  • The merger also brings real execution risk because it joins Qualtrics, a fast-growing software company, with Press Ganey Forsta, which has long managed patient surveys and experience measurement programs 2.
  • Customers and analysts have questioned how patient and healthcare-provider data will be combined under Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) privacy rules, and which product roadmap will come first 2.

The deal raises the stakes for proprietary data in specialized AI

  • Qualtrics is betting that Press Ganey Forsta’s healthcare expertise, data, and benchmarking will make its platform stronger as it expands healthcare data and AI tools 3.
  • Qualtrics has called the combined offering the “world’s largest AI dataset for human experiential context ever assembled” 4.
  • The move suggests that the next phase of competition may favor companies with stronger specialized data as much as strong algorithms 2.
  • That raises pressure on rivals such as Medallia, a customer and employee experience software company, and Sprinklr, a customer experience management software company, to lean on their own advantages and defend their position 1.
