US smart eyewear startup Solos sues Meta, Oakley over patents

Meta Platforms Inc., along with EssilorLuxottica SA and its Oakley subsidiary, is facing a patent infringement lawsuit from Solos Technology Ltd. in a US federal court in Massachusetts.

Solos alleges that Meta and the other defendants have willfully infringed on patents related to smart eyewear technology, seeking billions of dollars in damages and an injunction that could impact sales of Ray-Ban Meta products.

The lawsuit primarily targets the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 1, claiming subsequent releases are derivative of the original platform and infringe on Solos’ patents.

The complaint also alleges that a Meta product manager cited Solos’ patents in a 2021 research study. Meta and EssilorLuxottica have not responded to requests for comment.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The lawsuit’s potential threat depends on details not yet public

  • To estimate how Ray-Ban Meta sales could be affected, the patent numbers named in the complaint need to be reviewed, and it needs to be confirmed whether Solos Technology is asking for a preliminary injunction that would pause sales.
  • From those filings, it can be determined whether the claims reach core capabilities or cover add-on features of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which hold over 70% of the market 1.
  • Once early court deadlines are set, it would become clearer how soon supply for Meta and partner EssilorLuxottica could be strained, since the pair have discussed doubling manufacturing output to meet demand, Bloomberg wrote.

Meta’s legal battle could create an opening for competitors

  • Rival smart glasses brands could benefit if an injunction or factory slowdown limits Meta shipments in a category that grew 110% year over year in the first half of 2025 2.
  • Best Buy and LensCrafters can reduce the risk of a Ray-Ban Meta shortage by stocking more units from Xiaomi or Xreal, which trailed Meta in market share in IDC’s combined augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) + display-less smart glasses market in 2Q25 3.
  • App developers and service providers preparing for a market projected to reach 18.7 million units in 2029 4 can spread platform risk by partnering with those alternative hardware makers.
