Valerie Szczepanik, recently appointed as the SEC’s chief AI officer, will head the initiative.
The task force will centralize the SEC’s AI projects and support cross-agency and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
It aims to accelerate responsible AI use, boost innovation and efficiency, and uphold strong governance.
Szczepanik has previously held several innovation and tech-related roles at the SEC.
The announcement comes as regulators around the world explore how AI can be applied in public sector operations.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The SEC’s AI push builds on years of fintech infrastructure development
The new AI task force represents an evolution of the SEC’s technology strategy rather than a sudden pivot to artificial intelligence.
Szczepanik previously directed the SEC’s Strategic Hub for Innovation and Financial Technology, which was established in 2018 to help fintech firms navigate regulatory requirements and promote innovation within existing compliance frameworks1.
The Hub was designed to streamline communication between the SEC and technology companies while enhancing the agency’s understanding of emerging technologies1.
By appointing the former fintech hub director to lead AI integration, the SEC is leveraging institutional knowledge built over years of technology engagement.
This continuity suggests the agency views AI as part of a broader digital transformation rather than an isolated initiative, potentially allowing for faster implementation since foundational processes for evaluating new technologies are already in place.
2️⃣ Financial regulators face a regulatory gap as AI adoption outpaces specific oversight frameworks
The SEC’s careful emphasis on “responsible” AI integration reflects a broader challenge facing financial regulators worldwide who are still developing AI-specific oversight approaches.
