US SEC, Binance seek 60-day extension in their legal dispute
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Binance have jointly requested a 60-day extension to pause their ongoing legal dispute.
The case has been on hold since February, after a stay was approved by Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
In a April 12, court filing, the SEC said the extension is needed for ongoing discussions and internal approvals of potential resolutions.
Binance’s legal team supported the request, citing judicial efficiency. If granted, both parties will submit a joint status report in mid-June.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Leadership change at SEC drives major shift in crypto enforcement approach
The 60-day pause in the Binance case reflects a fundamental shift in the SEC’s enforcement philosophy under new leadership since January 2025.
Acting SEC Chair Mark Uyeda has paused new enforcement actions against crypto firms unless fraud is involved, marking a significant change from the previous administration’s more aggressive litigation strategy 1.
This represents a broader institutional change as the SEC transitions from “regulation by enforcement” to a more collaborative approach with the crypto industry, affecting major ongoing cases 2.
The joint motion mentions “productive discussions,” which aligns with the SEC’s evolving stance toward settling rather than pursuing lengthy litigation against major crypto exchanges 1.
The timing is notable as Paul Atkins, who advocates for a regulatory environment more conducive to innovation, awaits confirmation as permanent SEC Chair 3.
2️⃣ Crypto task force signals structured regulatory framework development
The case pause connects to Commissioner Hester Peirce’s new crypto task force, which represents the SEC’s first coordinated effort to develop comprehensive regulations rather than rely on case-by-case enforcement.
The task force is actively seeking industry input through public roundtables to address fundamental regulatory issues, including crypto asset classification, trading platforms, and custody solutions 4.
This collaborative approach marks a significant departure from previous strategies, with the SEC now explicitly inviting “builders, enthusiasts, and skeptics to engage” in regulatory development 5.
