US robotics software startup Sereact raises $110m

Sereact, a robotics software startup, said on April 27 that it raised US$110 million in a series B round led by Headline to expand and build an AI model for industrial robots.

Bullhound Capital, Felix Capital, and Daphni also joined the round, while the company did not disclose its valuation.

Sereact makes software for robots used in tasks such as picking and moving parts.

Its Cortex 2.0 model is designed to help machines simulate outcomes and choose next actions, CEO Ralf Gulde said, with BMW and Daimler Truck using its software and H&M in talks with the company.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Sereact’s pitch for a robot brain rests on specific performance figures

  • Backers are betting on Sereact’s focus on software. They see its AI as a possible shared control layer for industrial robots that need vision and autonomy, unlike rivals centered on hardware 1.
  • Cortex is a Vision Language Action Model (VLAM), an AI model that links what a robot sees, understands, and does. It was trained on millions of real picking actions, not only lab simulations 2.
  • Sereact says the software reaches more than 98% first-attempt pick success, with accuracy above 98% from the first pick 2.
  • For warehouses, that can bring payback within weeks. Sereact also says one robot can do the work of 3 to 4.5 full-time equivalent workers, depending on shift patterns, and save customers up to 111,000 euros (US$130,000) a month 2.

Competition to build a shared intelligence layer for robots is heating up

  • The funding round adds to a move away from hardware-heavy robotics toward software that can serve as a shared intelligence layer 1.
  • The broader ‘Physical AI’ ecosystem applies AI models to machines in the real world. The hard part is building data systems that scale, keeping labels consistent, and iterating fast enough for production use 3.
  • SEER Robotics, a robotics company focused on intelligent industrial automation, is also pursuing adaptable AI. It uses deep learning for pallet picking and placing when pallets are misaligned, deformed, or stacked unevenly 4.
  • Sereact says it aims to become the leading platform for robotics applications 1.
