US robotics firm Gecko Robotics gets $125m, hits $1.3b valuation

Gecko Robotics, a robotics company based in Pittsburgh, has raised US$125 million in a series D funding round, increasing its valuation to US$1.25 billion.

This funding milestone follows about 12 years after its founding by Jake Loosararian.

The funding round was led by Cox Enterprises, marking a total funding of US$347 million for Gecko. Previous investors include USIT, XN, Founders Fund, and Y Combinator.

In December 2023, the company raised US$173 million in its series C round at a valuation of $633 million.

The company intends to use the latest funding to further expand its operations in the defense, energy, and manufacturing sectors.

Gecko Robotics specializes in developing robots that can climb, fly, and swim to inspect critical infrastructure. The robots’ data is analyzed using its AI-powered platform, Cantilever, which helps organizations monitor and maintain physical assets.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Infrastructure inspection market represents a massive, often overlooked AI opportunity

While consumer AI applications grab headlines, Gecko Robotics’ success highlights the untapped potential in industrial inspection automation.

The annual cost of safety inspections in U.S. power plants alone is approximately $15 billion, representing just one segment of the critical infrastructure maintenance market Gecko targets 1.

Gecko’s robots dramatically reduce inspection time from several days to just one day, directly addressing a significant pain point for industrial facilities where downtime is extraordinarily costly 2.

This efficiency gain explains why investors have been willing to double the company’s valuation in less than a year, recognizing that innovations reducing maintenance costs while improving safety have immense market potential.

The company’s expansion across defense, energy, and manufacturing demonstrates how AI and robotics solutions that solve real-world industrial challenges can scale across multiple sectors with similar inspection needs.

2️⃣ Industrial robotics startups demonstrate distinctive funding patterns

Gecko Robotics’ journey shows a methodical funding progression typical of hardware-intensive startups, where capital requirements increase as the technology proves its market viability.
