Founders Fund backs $300m in US nuclear startup Radiant
Radiant, a US-based startup developing portable nuclear microreactors, has raised over US$300 million in new funding to expand its manufacturing capabilities.
The round was led by Draper Associates and Boost VC, with participation from existing and new investors, including Founders Fund and Chevron Technology Ventures.
Radiant plans to use the funds to build a factory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, aimed at mass-producing its Kaleidos portable reactors.
The company is preparing for the first test of its Kaleidos Demonstration Unit at Idaho National Laboratory’s DOME facility, scheduled for summer 2026.
Radiant has also signed agreements to deliver reactors to a US military base and to supply 20 units to Equinix, a global data center operator.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Radiant still in NRC pre-application, which clouds a 2028 launch
- Radiant entered NRC pre-application in October 2022 12. It is weighing Part 50 or Part 52, which are two-step or one-step license options, and has not filed either application.
- Some NRC filings are marked non-public or proprietary, so they do not appear on the public docket 1.
- The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) fast-track pilot program lets testing proceed under DOE authorization rather than NRC licensing, yet it does not replace NRC licensing for commercial units 3.
- A 2026 test at Idaho National Laboratory’s Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) would leave a separate NRC review ahead, which often takes years for novel designs 2.
Data center operators can work with microgrid integrators as nuclear interest grows
- Energy project developer Creekstone Energy is studying at least 2 GW of advanced nuclear for a 25-acre data center in Delta, Utah 4.
- Radiant units weigh roughly 70 tons, which exceeds standard container or truck limits and triggers heavy-haul logistics with routing plus permit planning 2.
- Radiant plans five-year fuel cycles, with refueling at a remote maintenance site that would require shipping the reactor out then returning it to service 2.
- Vendors that handle interconnection services, permitting, or specialized transport can pitch to data center buyers that evaluate nuclear paths, especially teams building AI infrastructure. This group includes microgrid integrators. They design and run local power systems that combine on-site generation, storage, and controls.
