US note-taking ring maker Sandbar raises $23m series A
Sandbar raised US$23 million in a series A led by Adjacent and Kindred Ventures and is a startup founded by former Meta employees Mina Fahmi and Kirak Hong that makes the Stream note-taking ring.
Stream uses a touch-sensitive panel to start recordings and a microphone that appears to be tuned for proximity and is off by default, so users have to lift their hand to their face to take notes.
The companion app offers an AI assistant and media controls, and the company said it will ship the ring this summer while building a web platform and improving latency.
Sandbar said the first batch of pre-orders sold out last year and that some users use the ring over 50 times a day, and the startup said it has 15 employees and has raised US$36 million to date, including US$13 million from True Ventures.
The hardware note-taking category is expanding with rivals such as Plaud and Pebble, and Adjacent’s Nico Wittenborn said he prefers Stream’s form factor because lifting the hand signals private intent.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
A premium price and a 2026 delivery date add context
- The Stream ring costs $249 in silver and $299 in gold 1.
- “Shipping this summer” means Summer 2026, so pre-orders come with a long wait 2.
- Sandbar plans to earn money from hardware plus a freemium software subscription 3.
- The free tier includes unlimited notes, yet caps AI interactions, which steers heavy users to the $10 per month Pro plan for more AI access 3.
Sandbar’s strategy hints at a shift in AI wearables
- Sandbar treats the ring as an entry point for recurring AI software revenue through subscriptions 3.
- The product aims to act as a quick “on-the-fly” voice capture tool, rather than a general-purpose smartwatch, which suggests more single-function ambient devices ahead 3.
- Unlimited notes on the free plan can help Sandbar collect a proprietary set of spontaneous voice notes.
- That information can strengthen its AI over time, building an advantage that grows as adoption increases 3.
