Members of a United States House of Representatives committee have asked Apple and Google to prepare their app stores for a possible nationwide TikTok ban, which could take effect on January 19, 2025.

In separate letters to Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, committee members emphasized that US law will prohibit hosting any “foreign adversary-controlled application” in app marketplaces once the ban is enacted.

They cited national security concerns in their request.

These letters follow a federal appeals court decision upholding legislation signed by President Joe Biden in April.

This law mandates that TikTok’s Chinese parent company must divest its US-based assets by January 19 to avoid removal from operations in the country.

The court indicated that the law specifically targets apps controlled by foreign adversaries to address national security risks, noting concerns that Beijing might use TikTok for surveillance.

The lawmakers have also urged TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to implement a divestiture plan immediately.

TikTok has criticized the ban, claiming it infringes on the First Amendment’s protection of free speech. With over 170 million users in the US, TikTok has hinted at possibly appealing the decision to the Supreme Court.
