US lawmakers push wider chip tool bans on China
US lawmakers are pushing for broader bans on chipmaking equipment sales to China after a bipartisan investigation found Chinese firms bought US$38 billion worth of advanced tools in 2024.
The House Select Committee on China said differing export rules from the US, Japan, and the Netherlands let non-US suppliers sell to Chinese firms that American companies could not.
Chinese purchases from the top five equipment makers made up nearly 39% of their combined sales last year, up 66% from 2022.
The committee urged coordinated restrictions among allies and cited security concerns about three Chinese chipmakers banned by the US in December 2024.
Tokyo Electron’s US president said sales to China have begun to fall in 2025 as new rules take effect.
