US lawmakers push Google, Apple to drop immigration-tracking apps

US lawmakers have asked Google and Apple to provide information on their actions to remove apps that track the movements of federal immigration officers.

The House Committee on Homeland Security highlighted ICEBlock, an app previously used to monitor US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, and requested a briefing by December 12.

Lawmakers warned the apps could endanger DHS personnel. Google said ICEBlock was never on its Play Store and that similar apps had been removed for policy violations.

Apple also removed ICEBlock and related apps for violating policies against content that could harm individuals or groups.

ICEBlock reportedly had over 1 million users before its removal.
