US language platform Preply bags $150m series D, valued at $1.2b

Preply, a global online language learning platform, closed a US$150 million series D funding round led by WestCap on January 21, 2026, valuing the company at US$1.2 billion.

The platform connects over 100,000 tutors with learners across 180 countries and offers lessons in more than 90 languages.

The funding will support AI and data development, platform improvements, and global expansion.

Since its previous funding round, Preply has more than tripled its tutor base and added over 40 new languages.

The company reported improved EBITDA and aims to deepen its use of AI to enhance human-led tutoring.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Preply’s profitability claims need deeper scrutiny of its tutor commission model

  • EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) positive results and a $1.2 billion valuation should be weighed against Preply’s revenue model, which is not laid out here.
  • Preply’s commission setup should be reviewed, including a policy where 100% of the fee from a tutor’s first trial lesson with a new learner is kept by the platform 1.
  • For later lessons, a sliding commission of 18% to 33% is charged, with the rate reduced after more teaching hours are logged on the platform 1.
  • The weighted average take-rate should be estimated and its effect on tutor retention should be tracked to judge long-term margins and durable growth.

Global expansion creates an opening for fintechs to solve Preply’s cross-border payout puzzle

  • Fintech operators could find room to help if Preply uses its $150 million funding to push into more countries.
  • Tutor withdrawals already run through Wise, Payoneer, PayPal, and Skrill 2.
  • Coverage across 180 countries will add friction around payouts, local currency access, and tax compliance.
  • A provider with lower transfer costs, wider currency options in markets like Brazil or India 3, plus built-in compliance tools could support international scale.
