US judge rejects xAI trade secrets lawsuit against OpenAI
A US federal judge in California has dismissed a lawsuit from Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, claiming that OpenAI stole trade secrets.
Judge Rita Lin said that xAI failed to provide sufficient evidence that OpenAI engaged in misconduct or induced former xAI employees to steal proprietary information.
The lawsuit, filed in September, alleged that ex-employees took source code related to xAI’s Grok chatbot when leaving for OpenAI, but the judge noted the absence of allegations against OpenAI itself.
XAI has been given until March 17 to amend its complaint.
The company is also suing a former engineer for allegedly taking trade secrets to OpenAI. OpenAI responded by calling the lawsuit baseless and part of a broader campaign to harass the company.
The legal dispute is part of ongoing conflicts involving Musk, OpenAI, and Microsoft, including a separate lawsuit seeking damages of up to US$134.5 billion.
