US judge blocks Pentagon move to cut Anthropic ties
A US judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from severing ties with Anthropic.
US District Judge Rita F. Lin issued a preliminary injunction pausing the administration’s plan.
Anthropic sued after the Pentagon labeled it a threat to the US supply chain amid a dispute over limits on military use of its AI.
The company sought assurances its AI would not be used for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons, while the government said it could not accept restrictions for national security reasons.
Lin wrote the measures did not appear tied to national security and could amount to illegal retaliation under the First Amendment.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The Pentagon move against Anthropic reaches beyond one contract
- The Trump administration ordered all federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s technology, not only the Department of Defense 1.
- Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth barred any military contractor, supplier, or partner from commercial activity with Anthropic. The order goes beyond common supply-chain limits and may fall outside the legal authority described publicly 1.
- The business impact landed fast, with hundreds of millions in projected revenue put at risk 2.
- A financial services client put a $15 million agreement on hold. A grocery store chain dropped a sales meeting, which cooled deals well outside the military 2.
The fight is reshaping how tech firms approach government AI work
- The Pentagon is keeping its AI rollout moving. It is shifting work to rivals, adding OpenAI and xAI to its classified networks while widening projects with Google 3.
- A split among big AI labs surfaced. Google’s AI chief plus employees from OpenAI and Google signed an amicus brief (a “friend of the court” filing meant to influence a judge) backing Anthropic 3.
- The dispute suggests voluntary ethics policies can buckle under government demands. That strain has fueled calls for Congress to write clear rules for AI in warfare and surveillance 4.
- Anthropic has raised the stakes by giving $20 million to a political action committee (PAC, a group that raises and spends money to influence elections) that backs candidates who favor AI regulation 5.
