US IT firm Cognizant to invest $182.8m for new India campus

US-based software service firm Cognizant plans to invest 1,583 crore rupee (US$182.8 million) to create an IT and ITES campus in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India.

The project aims to generate 8,000 jobs, with operations expected to start by March 2029.

The Andhra Pradesh government will allocate 21.31 acres of land in Kapulauppada under the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority for this initiative.

The land will be leased to Cognizant at a nominal rate of 99 paise.

This project is anticipated to significantly boost the development of the state’s IT sector.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ IT giants’ strategic shift to tier-2 cities reshaping India’s tech landscape

Cognizant’s massive investment in Visakhapatnam reflects a growing trend among major IT firms to expand beyond traditional tech hubs like Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune.

This investment follows TCS’s similar announcement to invest ₹1,370 crore in the same city, demonstrating an industry movement toward emerging urban centers 1.

The strategy serves multiple purposes: it allows companies to optimize real estate costs while tapping into untapped talent pools in these regions 2.

Visakhapatnam has already proven its potential as an emerging IT hub, generating approximately 10,000 jobs in the IT and BPO sectors even during the challenging COVID-19 pandemic period 3.

This shift could rebalance India’s tech ecosystem, which has historically been concentrated in a handful of tier-1 cities, potentially creating more distributed economic growth across the country.

2️⃣ Government incentives proving critical in tech hub development

The Andhra Pradesh government’s decision to allot 21.31 acres at the nominal rate of 99 paise demonstrates how incentives have become essential in the competition to attract major tech investments 4.

This approach mirrors strategies used globally where governments offer substantial incentives to attract tech companies, such as tax breaks and subsidized infrastructure.
